The Journey to Discovering Happiness Right Where You Are At!
A question that often crosses my mind is, “How does one find true happiness?
I have asked myself this question numerous times. I have listened to hundreds of gurus, teachers, motivational speakers, all of whom have different answers to this question. I mean, there are so many ways to address the subject of happiness. Some would say to achieve satisfaction, you need to find your true self, others would say finding God, love, and acceptance. All we know is that it is something we all want to attain and experience as often as possible. And there is this long list of things that we believe will bring us happiness.
We often measure our level of happiness by the goals we set for ourselves or the milestones we aim to hit. We measure ourselves by our performance at work, our contribution to our families or our volunteer work. But my question is still how do we honestly find happiness? An introspective question, where you are challenged to look within yourself and discover what brings you the deepest level of joy. I may be proposing a perspective that may have been stated many times before by countless philosophers. For example, Dada Vaswani
“Happiness, true happiness, is an inner quality. It is a state of mind. If your mind is at peace, you are happy. If your mind is at peace, but you have nothing else, you can be happy. If you have everything the world can give – pleasure, possessions, power – but lack peace of mind, you can never be happy.”
Now I have come across individuals who had not realized their purpose yet. Although, they were without a defined goal and I realized something exciting. They were not void of happiness or joy. They were at peace because they choose to be at peace. And I also found that individuals living within their purpose lived an excitement and optimistic life. Now, on the contrary, there are people in both of these specific examples which could not find happiness. My point is it not their social status or level of success that had anything to do with their happiness.
Hear me out; there is a layer of fulfillment in life where we become aware of our purpose. But it is when we learn the most significant lesson. That living a happy life is a conscious choice, just like everything other aspects of our life, WE CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY! It is not this thing that suddenly happens to us when we get married, have a kid or become a millionaire. Happiness and joy are found within us not outside of us.
Realizing this changed my day to day life, just understanding that I had the power to choose to be happy every day. Seeing that I had to purposely do things that brought me joy gave me a new sense of control over my emotional well-being. So many time we conform to the way we think other people expect us to live. Instead of taking the risk of created our journey and living in our truth. Discovering how crucial it is to take the time to figure out what I wanted and not to be afraid to go after it was, in fact, a considerable part of my pursuit of happiness.
We are all in search of answers, and we are all looking for that something we believe will bring us joy. All the while life is happening things are changing, trials come, job loss, loss of loved ones or a love relationship.
What is most important is to seek out the things that bring you joy, drawing, acting, coding, making puppets.
Whatever it is, whether it is a business or a hobby finding those things to create with your mind and your hands. Make peace with yourself, forgive yourself and others, let go of the past, and be present. Do what brings you the deepest level of joy and make a conscious decision to pursue your highest degree of happiness and fulfillment actively.
Don’t fall victim to the victim mentality.
At times we can become unhappy because of the victim mentality. “I am this way because of this person’s actions, or it was these circumstances that happened to me and made me the way that I am.” If you want to take control of your happiness, joy, well-being, and success, it first starts with accepting full responsibility for the chooses you have made and the situation you are in; this will then empower you to make the necessary changes to overcome it! We can’t control what happens to us, but we can control how we react to it.
